Material Safety Data Sheet
Liquid Oxygen

Section I – Identification
Chemical Name and Synonyms:    Oxygen
Trade Name and Synonyms:    Liquid Oxygen, LOX
Chemical Family:    Oxidizer
Formula:    O2

Section II – Hazardous Ingredients
Material:    Oxygen
Volume %:    99.5

Section III – Physical Data
Boiling Point:    -297.4°F
Vapor Density (Air = 1.0):    1.11
Percent Volatile by Volume:    100%
Evaporation Rate:    Gas
Appearance and Odor:    Colorless and odorless gas

Section IV – Fire and Explosion Hazard Data
Extinguishing Media:    Non-flammable, VIGOROUSLY ACCELERATES COMBUSTION
Special Fire Fighting Procedures:     Keep containers cool with water spray.  Remove source of oxygen which accelerates combustion.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards:     Excessive pressure can build up due to heat.  Container may explode if pressure relief devices should fail to relieve pressure.

Section V – Health Hazard Data
Effects of Overexposure:    Breathing high concentrations (over 75% by volume) may cause symptoms of hyperoxia including cramps, nausea, dizziness, hypothermia, respiratory difficulty, fainting convulsions, capable of leading to death.
Emergency and First Aid Procedures:     Remove to area with fresh air and assist respiration.  Obtain prompt medical attention and advise physician of hyperoxia.  For cryogenic burns of frostbite, flush affected area with warm (not hot) water.  Obtain prompt medical attention.

Section VI – Reactivity Data
Stability:    Stable
Materials to Avoid:    Hydrocarbons and other flammable  material

Section VII – Spill or leak procedure
Steps to be taken in case material is released or spilled:    Evacuate all personnel from area.  Attempt to stop release.  Remove ignition sources.  Ventilate area.
Waste Disposal Method:    Vent to atmosphere in an open area.

Section VIII – Special Protection Information
Eye Protection:    Safety goggles or glasses and face shield
Protective Gloves:    Loose fitting, insulated
Local Exhaust:    Recommended
Ventilation:    Prevent oxygen concentration over 25%
Respiratory Protection:    Not required
Other Protective Equipment:     Safety shoes when handling cylinders.  Face shield, insulated gloves, rubber shoes and apron when handling liquid oxygen.

Section IX – Special Precautions
Precautions to be taken in handling and storage:     Do not store near combustible materials or in hot locations.  Oxygen is an oxidizing gas.  VIGOROUSLY ACCELERATES COMBUSTION.
Other Precautions:    Cylinders should not be dropped.  Keep properly secured or protected to prevent cylinders from being knocked over.  Material can be stored outside.  Temperature should be kept below 125°F.  Cylinders should be stored upright with valve in place.
Additional Information:    Please refer to CGA Pamphlets G-4 “Oxygen,” G-4.1 “Cleaning Equipment for Oxygen Service,” P-1 “Safe Handling of Compressed Gases in Containers,” P-12 “Safe Handling of Cryogenic Liquids,” and P-14 “Accident Prevention in Oxygen-Rich and Oxygen-Deficient Atmospheres.”
