Recognizing Cryogenic Gas Hazards
An important notice for cryogenic product distributors

Cryogenic oxygen is a liquefied gas which has a boiling point of -297.4 degrees Fahrenheit.  Clearly, a major hazard is produced by extreme cold temperatures, which can immediately freeze bodily tissues and embrittle other materials.

However, cold is not the only hazard of which you need to be aware.  Cryogenic oxygen has an expansion ration of 1 to 860.  This means that one cubic foot of liquid oxygen, when vaporized to a gas, will create 860 cubic feet of gaseous oxygen, within seconds, in addition to many hundredfold of expansion pressure.  It is very important that cryogenic gases not be entrapped within hoses, piping systems or other containers without appropriate pressure relief protection to avoid equipment rupture due to a rapid build-up of extreme pressure.
