Van Outfitting For Liquid Oxygen
1. A properly secured fire extinguisher with a 10BC rating.
2. "No Smoking" signs must be posted inside the vehicle and at appropiate locations outside the vehicle.
3. Vehicle must be equipped with an Emergency Warning Traingle kit.
4. All equipment must be "tied down" to prevent movement.
5. Passive multiple vents must be present in the oxygen compartment.
6. The driver should be seperated from the oxygen tank by a bulkhead.
7. The patient's reservoir must be weighed by a Weights and Measures certifiable scale.
8. Placards are required when the combined gross weight of liquid oxygen and gaseous oxygen, including shipping containers, is 1,000 lbs. or more. Placards can remain on the vehicle if less than 1,000 lbs. are present, but must be flipped over when there is no hazardous material present.
9. DOT decals must be placed on both sides of any vehicle that is placarded.
10. Wheel chocks must be on board.
Driver Safety Requirements
1. Driver must use goggle or glasses, ear protectors and protective gloves when transfilling.
2. Protective footwear should be worn when carrying LOX units, or handling high pressure cylinders.
3. No Smoking is allowed within 25 feet of the vehicle.
4. The driver manifest must be current, reflecting the quantity of hazardous materials on board the vehicle.
5. A copy of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations must be in the driver's possession while operating the vehicle.
6. When the vehicle meets the above criteria for placarding, the driver must have a commercial driver's license.
